So, first off, I can hardly believe I have a 12 year old! When did he grow up? *sigh* Anyway, knowing his surgery was scheduled for the 6th of February, we decided (very last minute) to throw him a birthday party. He originally wanted to go roller blading, have pizza, and cupcakes and ice cream, but after looking at prices around town, we decided to pull together one we could do at the church.
So, we planned broom hockey, balloon darts, target coin toss, and decorating cupcakes. It was the Saturday before the Superbowl, so the broom hockey teams were, appropriately, the Ravens and the 49ers!
It was a pretty intense game for a while. Braden & Gavin took turns subbing since B wasn't feeling the best, and Gavin got tired from all the running around.
There were so many close calls when we thought the "puck" would go in, just to be shot back out into the middle of the floor again. I was a little nervous that the girls wouldn't like to play, but they got right into and were just as intense as the boys.
The kids played for quite a while, and the score was something like 8 to 3, but they were getting tired, so we decided to intervene. We told them each team had 8 points, and that the first team to 10 would win. It was a close match after that, but in the end, the Raven's eeked out a win! Scott had a BLAST and I'm SO glad we were able to do this before his surgery. So glad the kids showed up, too, especially since it was so last minute. (Scott literally handed the invites out on Friday, and the party was Saturday. Yikes!)
Next was balloon darts. We had four different colors of balloons on our board: Green, Blue, Red, & Purple. Each color was worth a different amount of points. Green was worth four points, red & blue were worth 3, and the purple were worth 1. Or something like that. We had the kids line up shortest to tallest, and tallied the points after three rounds or three darts (or throws) each. They had a ball, and could hardly stand still in line while they waited for their next turn.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of the kids decorating their cupcakes, or of the target coin toss. We kept score (the tally of points each kid got), and the "winner" got to choose a candy bar to take home with them, then the next highest score, then the next, etc. (Each person ended up with a candy bar.) Our overall winner was Scott's best friend, Danika! He was pretty happy about that.
The kids then ate their decorated cupcakes and ice cream while Scottie opened his presents. He's got a pretty good group of friends, and was very happy that out of all the people he invited, only one was not able to come. Happy 12th Birthday, my Scottie Bug!
