New Year's Eve

The night was spent with family - all of Brandon's family was there and we had a lot of fun. The game of Spoons/Straws/Pig (whatever name you've played by - we played by all three that night) is really quite fun. I'd never played before, so it was fun for me. We laughed, we ate snacks, we listened to my nephew, Mason, sing "Hey, Soul Sister" with Train during the NYE celebration on TV.

Playing Spoons

The Shaffer gang

After our Spoons game, my BIL, Jason, packed some flour in a cup, inverted it onto a plate and put an M & M on top. We had to pass the plate around and try to cut some of the flour off with a knife without making the M & M topple. We passed it around quite a few times, each time thinking it would be the last.

Calm Molly, and nervous Linda

Molly was seriously fearless. The rest of us would hesitantly cut the flour praying that our shaking hands wouldn't bump the plate and make the M & M fall, and she just sliced through the flour as though it was no big thing!

And, I love how nervous Linda looks in the above picture! It was a tense game.

Linda's turn

LaRean goes after it

My last time, I was a little ambitious and cut just a little bit too much, and it toppled on me. Oh, and the loser (that's me) had to pick up the M & M in their mouth - no hands allowed. I hoped that it would just stick to my tongue, but it just pushed it further into the flour, so I had no choice but to do a face plant into the flour. :)

"Hmm - where should I cut?"

"I'll try here . . ."

"Maybe it'll just stick to my tongue so I don't have to get flour everywhere"

"No go . . . Face plant!"

Me, the gracious "loser"

I had to get all of the flour out of my nose and mouth. Blech!

We had the NYE festivities going on in the background, and when Train came on to sing "Hey Soul Sister" I had to get a video of my nephew singing it. He's super cute.

Thanks for the fun times, Shaffer family!

Christmas 'n such

Christmas was wonderful this year - no one was sick (two years ago), sleep-deprived (last year; new baby), or anything like that. My parents came up to visit the weekend before Christmas and were able to be there for our choir Christmas program in church where I sang a solo. It was SO nice to have them there.

Tracking Santa on Christmas Eve

Our annual reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas"

Every year, we get a game or movie for us to open up on Christmas Eve. This year, it was Twister!

"Right hand, green!"

(Notice Connor right in the middle of it all!)

(He was stoked that he got this from Santa. He'd been asking for one for months, so was so happy that Santa was able to bring him one.)

Ooh - the Recon!

Maverick's for everyone - even Connor!

Ready for battle

At this point, B insisted that we go downstairs and have a nerf war. We weren't even done opening presents, but he was SO excited and antsy to use his new Recon and Maverick that we gave in and had a nerf war. It was a lot of fun.

And, I think it was the year for nerf guns. I have several friends who gave their kids nerf guns for Christmas, my BIL/SIL gave the boys more nerf guns, my sister, brother, BIL/SIL gave their kids nerf guns for Christmas . . . Seems like it was the thing to do this year!

Connor was just hungry - so he found an apple and planted himself in the middle of the room and worked on his apple.

Mmm - juicy!

Scott has been using his dad's tools all year long building and fixing. He's pretty good about putting things back where they belong, but not always. Several times, Brandon would go to get one of his tools, and it wouldn't be there. So, we got Scott his very own tool kit. You should see him just beam when we tell him there's something that needs to be fixed!

My very own? Wow!

This year, Brandon's parents got all of their kids an air hockey table for Christmas. We had to rearrange the downstairs living room to fit it in, but now that everything is all moved around, we actually like it better! We've had a few tournaments on it, and the kids friends LOVE to come over and play with them.

Air hockey - SUH-WEET!!

Guess what? Santa brought me . . .

. . . a new kitchen sink, and disposal! It was MUCH needed. The porcelain on our old sink was scratched, dented, stained . . . It was blah. And our disposal was rusting through and every six weeks or so, we'd find a new hole where water was leaking out. So, we started looking for a new disposal, and then decided that while we (Brandon) were tearing everything out, we might as well get a new sink, too.

So, we looked online, found one we liked, and Santa delivered it a few days early. Brandon stayed up late undoing pipes and fittings and taking the old sink/disposal out, and then putting the new ones in. Not all of the pipes fit quite right, so the day after we got back from the museum, he finished it all up. The fittings, the sprayer, the drinking water. We LOVE it! It's so nice to have a big sink that we can put our big pots into and not have it overflowing onto the counter.

Working on taking out the old sink

The gross old sink

No matter how hard I scrubbed, or with what, I couldn't get it, or keep it, any cleaner than this. Blech!

Our beautiful new sink! Ha-le-lujah!

Complete with dirty dishes! ;)

". . . or maybe just being a distraction!"

"Now I'm helping . . ."

" . . . or maybe I'll just eat Dad's tools."

Thanks, Santa, for our wonderful new sink! And, thanks Brandon, for installing it for us. I love it! And you.

Discovery Museum

So, towards the end of November I got an email with a super great deal for the Discovery Museum down in Salt Lake. Since we had a two week Christmas vacation this year, we decided we would go down and let the kids explore. We met up with our friends Dave & Patti and their adorable little girl, Conni, so we could all play. They had a BALL!

We parked and headed across and around and through the Gateway Mall, and made it to the water fountain. The boys loved playing in it, and I had to remind them (even though it was FREEZING cold) not to get wet. What is it with little kids and water? When the choreographed water show came on, they all stared in awe, and then went to sit down so they could watch. It was so funny.

After the museum, we headed to Temple Square to see the lights. By this point, my boys were ornery (B especially - he's had a bad attitude these past few months. *sigh* I don't know what to do with him). Poor Conni hit her limit by this point too, and just melted. Connor was completely unfazed by everything, though, and ended up taking a nap. Good thing, too, because he hadn't had a nap at all.

Dave & Patti decided to head out and take Conni home, and we headed to dinner. The boys had free Sizzler coupons for doing well in school, so we headed there. I will highly NOT recommend EVER eating at the downtown Sizzler.

Service was horrible. They got my order wrong - twice - and after several waiters/waitresses coming 7 different times (the manager came twice, too), Scott still didn't have his mini pizza he ordered, nor did they bring the chocolate syrup for his milk that he'd asked for. When they finally brought the correct order out for me, it was cold, as was Brandon's shrimp.

So, they cooked a new one, and got it wrong again. After us asking our waitress several times for Scott's chocolate syrup, she finally brought it out. Braden told her, "You're too late. He already drank his milk." She turned around, without a word, and left. And didn't bring him anymore milk with the syrup or anything. Just walked away. *sigh* Don't go there. Please.

Anyway, after a very frustrating dinner, we finally headed home. All in all (minus dinner) it was a fun day, and we're glad we did it. Check the museum out sometime - it was quite fun. :) Enjoy the pictures.

The day before, Gavin fell and hit a toy with his lip and got a HUGE fat lip. The inside was black and blue, too. Poor kid really hurt.

Waiting for the water to shoot up - I LOVE this picture!

Ah! Run away!!

Hmm . . . what does this do?

Running to the next thing.
Hurry, hurry! I don't want to miss anything.

"I'd like to buy these items, please."

"Time to go - let's gas up."

Bryant & Bryce, our next door neighbors

Funnily enough, our next door neighbors also happened to go to the Museum at the same time. (This was not planned - we had NO idea they'd be there.) My boys LOVE these two boys. They play basketball with them, football, soccer, nerf gun wars, hide and seek. They've built forts with them, pretended to be Indians with a teepee and scouting for food . . . They've done it all. And these two boys are SO patient with all of the kids in the neighborhood - ranging in age from 3 on up. We love this family.
